Listed below are a few ideas to assist your best friend should they need it. This is a great time to be sipping tea and be in-the-know!
Mullein Otic Mix
The following recipe is for external ear infections on your pup:
- Mullein flowers
- Olive Oil
- Garlic-
Pack the flowers loosely in a glass jar & cover them with olive oil. To increase antibiotic effectiveness, add a clove or two of garlic per pint of mullein oil. Let mixture sit for 2-3 weeks. Strain and bottle it again.
To use, apply several drops of the oil (warmed to body or room temperature) to the affected ear. When stored in the refrigerator, the oil will last for several months.
Herbal Eye Compress
- 1 Teaspoon fresh or dried eyewash herb of choice (listed below), or a few drops of herbal extract.
- 1 Pint of Water
Simmer the herb in water for 10 minutes. Allow the infusion to cool to a comfortable temperature. Soak a clean cloth or piece of sterile cotton in the infustion. Wring out the cotton or cloth so it doesn’t drip.
Apply the warm, wet compress to the lid of the affected eye for 10 minutes, four to six times per day. If using cotton, use a fresh piece for each application.
As an alternative, steep a tea bag of chamomile tea, allow it to cool to a comfortable temperature, then apply it over the eye several times per day.
Choose an herb for the eye compress:
Calendula- A potent vulnerary for wound healing
Chamomile- An Excellent anti-inflamatory
Goldenseal or Oregon Grape Root- Both herbs contain berberine compounds that are active against bacteria, viruses, fungi & yeasts.
If opting for the herbal extract, choose one of the above four to mix with the water.
